Technology workshop European School of Lighting Design: Amsterdam (NL), 17th-20th October of 2014
The European Lighting School organized 9 workshops of 4 days in 3 countries. Every workshop had a special topic. The workshop in Amsterdam was held from 17.10 till 20.10 2014. The topic was lighting with modern fixtures for theater and events. The focus was on moving lights and led fixtures. There was much interest in Slovakia and the Czech Republic for this workshop. In these countries, it was difficult for technicians and light designers to work with modern equipment, due to lack of money and possibilities to improve skills. The workshop was organized and hosted by the Institute of Light design in The Netherlands, contact Isabel Nielen. The workshop leaders were the Dutch light designers Maarten Warmerdam and Bastiaan Schoof and extra Floriaan Ganzevoort on Monday. There was 11 participants. Most of the time, a new technology means new possibilities. It’s a much made assumption that it will also make our life easier. This workshop was focused on a couple of “recent” introduced technologies in our field of work and tried to help to grasp enough knowledge about these so one would feel more confident about implementing them. The work was on the basics on how to organize and work with the fixtures. Hands on workshop assignments were designed for finding out what can and can’t be done and most importantly: how to do it.
The workshop was set-up around three main topics. First of all: Light sources. The introduction of discharge and LED brought possibilities. At the same time, they require a different approach to colour, intensity and timing. Especially when one start to combine different light sources, he is likely to experience each of the light sources characteristics. The second topic is Moving light. Although the main principle is the same, there comes in different forms and quality. The work was concentrated on what to look for, how to work with them effectively, and discover their possibilities. The focus was then aimed on controls at last. How to make them do what one wants. The work and look was aimed at both conventional control boards and the affordable alternatives. Aim of this workshop was to give the opportunity to work with modern equipment and controllers to all participants. Not only to improve their technical skills but also to give them time and space to explore the artistic possibilities of the equipment.
